Barbie Gets the Boot?

barbieIf one West Virginia lawmaker has his way little girls in his state will no longer receive Barbie’s for their birthday.

Delegate Jeff Eldridge’s address requesting a ban on “Barbie and other similar dolls that promote or influence girls to place an undue importance on physical beauty to the detriment of their intellectual and emotional development,” received a standing ovation, according to the Associated Press. However, it was not as popular with other citizens in his state.

Eldridge told reporters that shortly after news leaked about his request to ban Barbie, he received about 3,000 messages -80 percent he called “foul”, according to the AP.

But Eldridge claims that his proposed bill has good intentions.

Eldridge’s background in counseling prompted his bill proposal. He witnessed first hand the body image struggles many young girls undergo and thought this would be a small stop toward helping them, according to the AP.

If I’ve helped just 10 kids out with this, to me it was worth it. Eldridge

“I personally feel that it ought to be up to the parents, what they let their kids play with,” Eldridge said. “So to me, it had nothing to do with Barbie. But it did have to do with the image that society places on our young children, on what they should look like to be able to succeed.” AP

So, what kind of message is Barbie sending?

If she were a real woman her measurements would be 39-21-33 inches, would be nearly impossible to achieve. There is a 1 in 100,000 chance a woman could achieve these measurements according to the article, Sex Roles: A Journal of Research.

I’m not sure a complete ban on Barbie is the way to go -everything in moderation as they say. Let little girls play with dolls, but make sure they understand the difference between playtime and real life.

  1. No, not Barbie. What am I going to tell my 9-year old daughter!
