Before You Decide to Go Under the Knife

At one time, the craziest way for a woman to revitalize the way she looked was to experiment with a new hairstyle, or even to change her hair color all together. However, in today’s world this quick fix is no longer wild -or permanent- enough for some women. Instead women are opting to go under the knife to obtain the youthful appearance they believe is beginning to evade them.

         In 2007 11.7 million surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures were performed in the United States, according to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Web site. Women accounted for 91 percent of the cosmetic procedures,  or roughly about 10.6 million, performed in 2007. Statistics for 2008 are not yet available.

 Although the number of plastic surgery cases continues to increase and there are a plethora of makeover shows on television now, such as E!’s Doctor 90201, which glorifies plastic surgery, women must remain hesitant before they decide to go under the knife. There have been several high-profile celebrity cases recently in which women have been drastically harmed by plastic surgery and some even died from it.

Most recently Tameka Foster, Usher’s wife, suffered serious cardiac complications from her plastic surgery procedure, according to People.com. Foster reportedly had the procedure done in Brazil, which leaves one to wonder why she chose not to have the surgery done in the U.S. Did doctors advise against it, while others in Brazil were more than happy to oblige her?

If you are considering plastic surgery make sure to consider all of your options and to do your homework. It could mean the difference between life and death.
